The Top 10 in the World's 50 Best Restaurants 2016

The 2016 World's 50 Best Restaurants list, sponsored by S. Pellegrino, has been announced and there are a lot of surprises and shake-ups in the list.  Osteria Francescana has been named the Top Restaurant in the World; last year, it was in 2nd place position.  Osteria Francescana is also one of the only restaurants on the list that offers an a la carte menu, making it one of the most affordable restaurants in the Top 10 restaurants.

Three of the top 10 restaurants are located in Spain, demonstrating the dominance of the country's cuisine which began with Ferran Adria's El Bulli which held on to the number 1 stop for an unprecedented five years, and continues with the prominence of El Cellar de Can Roca (last year, named the top restaurant in the world and this year in the #2 spot).  In general, Europe won big with 7 of the top 10 restaurants in the world located in Europe.  Copenhagen's Noma, the brainchild of chef-owner Rene Redzepi, which won the top spot in 2013 and 2014 was demoted to 5th place in 2016, a surprising showing for the restaurant since the restaurant will be closing in 2016.

Unlike the Michelin Guides which are based on the decisions of a few select anonymous inspectors, the World's 50 Best Restaurants are determined by a group of 1,000 notable food experts, food writers, chefs, restaurateurs, and gastronomes who participate in an anonymous poll.  Panelists are split among 27 world regions, though Europe won heavily throughout the list, with Africa only bringing in 1 restaurant in the top 50 and no Indian or Middle Eastern restaurants.  Each panelist ranks 7 restaurants, four from their own home country and three from other regions in the world, meaning that thousands of submissions will be tallied before choosing the top 50 restaurants.  Global consulting firm Deloitte independently verifies and tallies the results which are announced each year in June.
